You need a valid licence to ride legally in Thailand.
A car licence does not cover a scooter. Any motorbike, whatever its engine size, requires a motorcycle licence: a Thai one, or an international permit carrying the motorcycle category. Riding without it voids your insurance in an accident and leaves you personally liable for all damages.
How It Works
Every booking runs through our partner's site, quick and straightforward.
What You Need to Know Before Renting
A short checklist to protect your deposit, your insurance, and your peace of mind.
In Thailand, your driving licence determines whether you are legally covered by insurance. Riding or driving without a valid licence for the vehicle category means that in the event of an accident, your rental insurance is void. You are personally liable for all damages, medical costs and third-party claims. Your original home country driving licence combined with an International Driving Permit is the standard requirement. A Thai driving licence is the most convenient solution as it removes all ambiguity.
Some rental shops insist on keeping your original passport until you return the vehicle. Never accept this. Reputable rental partners ask for a photocopy of your passport and a refundable cash deposit only. Your original passport should always stay with you. All partners we work with follow this rule without exception.
Tier 1: Por.Ror.Bor (free, included): Third-party medical only. 30,000–80,000 THB maximum. Does not cover your injuries or the rental vehicle. Tier 2: Basic damage waiver (+100–200 THB/day): Covers rental vehicle damage. 20,000 THB excess. Tier 3: Mid-tier (+200–400 THB/day): Excess reduced to 10,000 THB. Adds theft protection. Tier 4: Comprehensive plus (+300–700 THB/day): Excess 5,000 THB. Recommended for longer trips or less experienced riders. None of these tiers cover your own personal injuries. For personal medical coverage, see our insurance guide.
See insurance guide →For monthly rentals, most partners require: proof of residence in Thailand (lease agreement or TM30 receipt), copy of passport and visa, refundable security deposit equivalent to one month of rental fee. Monthly car rentals typically include full insurance, maintenance and roadside assistance as standard.

Ready to Get Moving in Thailand?
Renting a vehicle is where expats lose the most money in their first months: a passport held as deposit, disputed damage on return, insurance that turns out not to cover the rider. We have selected partners in all 6 cities we cover who rent to foreigners on written terms, with real insurance and without holding your passport.
