Why Families Choose Thailand
International schools. Safe neighbourhoods. A lifestyle that changes how your kids see the world. Thailand has become one of Asia's top family destinations, and for good reason. The right move is choosing in the right order: school first, neighbourhood second, apartment third. Here is everything you need to know before you arrive.
Understanding Your School Options
There are three main types of schools available to expat families in Thailand. Each has a different profile, a different cost and suits different family situations.

The gold standard for expat families.
International Schools
International schools in Thailand follow internationally recognised curricula. Instruction is entirely in English. Teachers are recruited internationally and qualifications are globally recognised, meaning your child can transition smoothly to a school in another country if you move again. The community is multicultural, the facilities are excellent and extracurricular activities are extensive.
Most expensive option. Annual fees range from €4,500 to €30,000+ per child. Waiting lists exist at the best schools. Apply 6 to 12 months in advance.
Best for
2+ year stays, Globally mobile families, English academic progression

Balance between local and international.
Bilingual Schools
Bilingual schools teach in both Thai and English. They follow a Thai curriculum with significant English language instruction alongside. These schools are significantly less expensive than full international schools while still offering a strong academic environment and good English proficiency. They are a good option for families planning a longer stay who want their children to learn Thai.
Qualifications may not transfer as smoothly internationally. Less common in smaller cities.
Best for
3+ year stays, Thai language learning, Budget-conscious families

Full immersion, minimal cost.
Local Thai Schools
Local Thai schools teach entirely in Thai and follow the national curriculum. Costs are very low or free for long-term residents. They are a genuine option for families planning an extended stay of five years or more who want full cultural immersion and for children who will grow up bilingual in Thai and their home language. The adjustment period can be significant, particularly for older children.
Not suitable for short or medium stays. Academic transition back to an international system can be challenging. Limited English in the classroom.
Best for
5+ year stays, Children under 8, Full cultural integration
School Options by City
The quality and range of international schooling varies significantly between cities. This is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing where to live as a family.

Bangkok has the widest and strongest selection of international schools in Thailand. Every major curriculum is represented including British, American, IB, French, German, Japanese and more. Some of the best international schools in Asia are located here. Competition for places at the top schools is real and waiting lists exist. Apply as early as possible, ideally 6 to 12 months before your intended start date. Proximity to your chosen school should be a primary factor when selecting your neighbourhood and apartment.
Chiang Mai has a solid selection of international and bilingual schools that serve its expat community well. The range is smaller than Bangkok but the quality at the top schools is genuinely high. Most major curricula are represented. It is a particularly good option for families who want a smaller, more community-oriented environment than Bangkok.
Phuket has a good range of international schools, particularly strong given the island's size. The British curriculum is well represented and there are solid IB options. The expat family community on the island is active and well connected. A good choice for families who prioritise beach lifestyle alongside quality education.
These cities have some international and bilingual school options, but the range is significantly more limited than Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket. Families with school-age children should research specific school availability carefully before committing to one of these cities. Fees are annual per child, excluding additional costs. Secondary and pre-university years are typically 15 to 25 percent higher than primary. First-year enrolment fees, capital levies and registration fees typically add €1,000 to €5,000 on top of annual tuition. All figures are indicative for 2026 and may vary between schools. Choose Your School First.
Then Find Your Home.
Families often choose their apartment before their school. In Bangkok, that mistake costs hours: a 10-kilometre school run can take 45 minutes each way at peak times, two hours a day for your children.
Do it in order. Research schools first and apply 6 to 12 months ahead. Once a place is confirmed, pick your neighbourhood for proximity, and we find the apartment: right area, right price, before you arrive.
In Bangkok or anywhere else in Thailand, tell us your school, your budget and your needs. We handle the rest.
