Thai Driving Licence for Expats: Complete Guide 2026
Driving legally in Thailand requires a Thai driving licence. Your foreign licence is not valid for daily use in Thailand beyond a short tourist stay. Whether you want to convert an existing foreign licence or obtain a Thai licence from scratch, the process is manageable but requires the right documents, the right visa and a visit to a Department of Land Transport office.
A valid non-immigrant visa is required to obtain a Thai driving licence. Tourist visas and visa exemption stamps do not qualify. DTV holders qualify as the DTV is a non-immigrant visa for driving licence purposes.
Do I Need a Thai Driving Licence?
Visiting Thailand for less than 90 days
Your foreign driving licence combined with an International Driving Permit issued in your home country is sufficient. You can drive legally during your stay without applying for a Thai licence. Most car and motorbike rental companies in tourist areas will accept your foreign licence or IDP for short stays.
Living in Thailand long-term
A Thai driving licence is a practical necessity. Your foreign licence is technically only valid for up to 90 days from your entry date. After that, driving without a Thai licence puts you at risk during police checks, creates problems in the event of an accident and may invalidate your insurance coverage. If you stay on a long-term visa such as the DTV, Non-Immigrant O, retirement visa or LTR, getting a Thai driving licence early in your stay is strongly recommended.
If you ride a motorbike, extra caution
Police checks targeting foreigners on motorbikes without a valid Thai licence are common in popular expat and tourist areas. The consequences of being caught without a valid licence on a motorbike in Thailand range from on-the-spot fines to impounding of the vehicle. If you ride a motorbike in Thailand regularly, getting a Thai motorbike licence is essential.
Which visas qualify?
- ✓Non-Immigrant B
- ✓Non-Immigrant O and OA
